Over at Crooked Timber they're discussing the hardships you face making a decent fruit cake in the Midwest.
Rule 1: Most problems with fruit cakes can be solved with liquor.
Rule 2: Most Americans don't like fruit cake.
Rule 3: Apply Rule 1 to solve Rule 2.
Well, "most" Americans voted Bush, didn't they (okay, 51%). I'm not ashamed to love fruitcake. I'm used to swimming against the current, in politics and in Christmas cake.
In our extremely mixed family (Arab, Jewish, Scots/Anglo American) we all share a love of dark rich fruitcake at the holidays. Anybody who doesn't like it can just politely leave more for us. I *never* give out fruitcake without quizzing the recipient - do you *really* like fruitcake? Because I won't share it if you don't.
Posted by: Leila at November 10, 2004 11:33 PMHi, I made fruit cakes from an old recipe. The problem is, it iss really hard. I'm soaking in brandy hoping that it will soften some. Would love to have your recipe or any comments about how hard is hard and does it soften as it cures?
Thanks,
Darlene
