All or 4?

What determines whether an intersection where all four approaches have to stop becomes a 4 way stop or an all way stop. My mind is not supple enough to work it out ...

I thought "all way" was British, "4-way" American. But I could just be an addlepated Canadian.

We don't do 4 way stops in Britain of any kind. We have mini-roundabouts instead. These are often mocked but to my mind offer a much more satisfactory approach - ie you give way to a vehicle already at the junction, but don't have to stop on the off-chance there might be one there you hadn't noticed: on the other hand you do have to slow down, which you don't at a cross roads if you utterly fail to spot it coming up (as I did more than once in the US last year - fortunately no one around to witness my embarrassment on either occasion).
