DEPTCOL identifies the household's department within Colombia, which is the major administrative level of the country and the only geographic identifier available in the samples.

The number of identified geographic units increased by four between 1964 and 1973 and by one between 1973 and 1985. Since then, the administrative division of the country in terms of Departments remains constant.
