faithful electors

via left2right this quote from the President:

, I don't see how you can be president at least from my perspective, how you can be president, without a relationship with the Lord," he said.

Whatever he means, Herzog's observation that "I don't see us electing any atheists or agnostics any time soon" is right.

For whatever reason America is the exception to the western pattern of secularism growing with modernity. Fame within the halls of academia probably awaits the person who adequately explains this fact.

I've heard one opinion on this - that the geographical separation possible in the USA plays into it. It's a lot easier to write off atheists in the rural areas of the bible belt if you don't know any.
